Relay Utah Offers Spanish Relay Service to Connect Utah’s
Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Speech Impaired with the Hearing Community
Free "Relay" Services for Telephone Translation between the Hard-of-Hearing and Hearing Communities in Spanish-to-Spanish/Spanish-to-English/English-to-Spanish
SALT LAKE CITY— Relay Utah encourages the use of toll-free, spanish-language telephone translation services, "Spanish Relay," to connect deaf, hard of hearing, and speech-disabled Utahans who desire to communicate in Spanish with Utah's hearing community.
Spanish Relay, available at 1-888-346-3162, is a recent addition to Relay Utah’s line of products and services designed especially for Utahans with hearing and speech difficulties. Like the standard Relay Utah 7-1-1 service, individuals contact a Relay operator who will "relay" messages. However, Spanish Relay operators translate the message Spanish-to-Spanish, Spanish-to-English, or English-to-Spanish, between a hearing party and a party using a text telephone (TTY) or Voice Carry Over (VCO) phone that combines both a voice and text phone in one.
Relay Utah’s translation services are available across the entire state. More than 35,000 Relay Utah calls are made through Relay’s toll-free 7-1-1 and Spanish language number each month by Utah’s estimated 100,000 deaf and hard of hearing.
"We are committed to promoting communication independence and see this latest enhancement to provide Utahans with a choice to communicate in the language they prefer and feel most comfortable as a reinforcement of this commitment," said Kristylynne Brady, telecommunications specialist for Relay Utah.
Future language translation services, offered by Relay Utah, will be determined by The Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
